Vos questions, nos réponses.

Ce que les visiteurs recherchent vraiment avant leur premier coffeeshop. La réponse courte d’abord, les détails ensuite.

Do I need to be a resident to buy in Amsterdam?

No. Amsterdam coffeeshops serve adult visitors with valid ID. The city has discussed limiting sales to residents, and we'll update this answer if anything changes.

How much can I buy?

Up to 5 grams per person per day, in any one coffeeshop.

Can I smoke weed on the street?

It's banned in the Red Light District (De Wallen) and in zones marked with signs. Elsewhere it's often tolerated, but be discreet and never near schools or playgrounds.

Do coffeeshops serve alcohol?

No. Licensed coffeeshops can't sell alcohol. Most serve coffee, tea, juice and snacks.

Can I smoke tobacco joints inside?

Not in the main room. The national smoking ban covers tobacco. Some shops have a separate smoking room; otherwise go pure or use a vaporiser.

Are edibles a good idea for beginners?

Only with care. They take up to 2 hours to kick in and last much longer. Start with a small amount and wait.

Do coffeeshops take cards?

Many do now, but some are still cash-only. Each page says which, and our card-payment list is checked in person.

Can I take cannabis home?

No. Taking cannabis across any border, including within Schengen, is illegal and treated as drug trafficking.

What is the difference between a coffeeshop and a café?

A coffeeshop sells cannabis. A café or "koffiehuis" sells coffee. Look for the green-and-white licence sticker in the window.
